Félicitations to Thierry van Waerebeke (Rotary Nouméa) who brings a Pacific Island flavour to our district leadership as Governor in the 2027-2028 Rotary year. The fifth 'off-shore' Governor in District 9910's history.Thierry was born in Tananarive, Madagascar in 1971 and lived there until he was 18, achieving his baccalaureat (diploma to access university in French system) in mathematics, physics and biology. He left Madagascar to study pharmacy in Paris University (the same university as his mother and grandfather) from 1989 to 1997 and added a diploma in management and marketing for pharmaceutical industry. The call of the islands was too strong, so he left Europe to do his compulsory military service in Tahiti as a pharmacist officer in charge of the military health service supply. He has served in the health service of the French military reserve and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In late 1998, he moved to New Caledonia where he started his career in a company supplying local pharmacies, before working in one himself. Thierry bought his own pharmacy in 2001 and at the same time, joined the board of “Groupement des Pharmaciens de Nouvelle Calédonie”, a local wholesaler of drugs and pharmaceutical supplies, where he has also held the roles of secretary and vice president. Thierry was president of the Pharmacist Chamber of New Caledonia from 2013 to 2024. Thierry started attending Rotary Club meetings in 2001 and joined the Rotary Club of Nouméa Ouen Toro in 2002. He was Secretary in 2003-2004 and President in 2006-2007. In 2008, he moved to the Rotary Club of Nouméa Ducos Boulari, where he was President in 2010-2011, and was the Foundation Lead from 2011 to 2022. In June 2022, he moved to the Rotary Club of Nouméa. He also initiated the charter of an Interact Club at James Cook International School, Nouméa in 2023. At a District level, Thierry was a member of the Foundation Committee from 2009 to 2014, and the Assistant Governor for New Caledonia for nine years. He was awarded Assistant Governor of the Year in 2016. Thierry’s passion for The Rotary Foundation is evident in his activities. He has organised nine District Grants, with the three clubs of New Caledonia, and two global grants. One was for the local Red Cross and the second to provide an oxygen generator to Tamatave Public Hospital in Madagascar. He received his first Paul Harris Fellow in 2006, became a Major Donor in 2008 and reached Major Donor level 4 in 2022. He has been a Paul Harris Society member from 2006 to 2023 and in 2011 was recognised with the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service, which recognises a Rotarian who has demonstrated outstanding active service to the Rotary Foundation. After an “annus horribilis” in 2024, when the family lost the house, the dog, the pharmacy, and many personal possessions during the 2024 riots in New Calédonia, Thierry decided it was time for a new career, as manager of a bakery chain. His experiences in the pharmacy profession, in Rotary at club and district levels, and as a member of a South Pacific Rotary Club bring a different perspective to the District Governor in the year following our regionalisation pilot. Thierry has been married to Valérie since 2004, a history senior teacher specialising in the medieval period. They have a son, Godefroy (19) and a daughter Aliénor (17). Both children studied at James Cook International School in Nouméa and are bilingual. Godefroy is preparing for engineering study in the French system and Alienor is studying at King’s College, Auckland. | Né à Tananarive (Madagascar) en 1971, Thierry y a vécu jusqu'à l'âge de 18 ans, obtenant son baccalauréat C. Il a quitté Madagascar pour étudier la pharmacie à l'Université Paris V (la même faculté que sa mère et son grand-père) de 1989 à 1997, complétée par un diplôme en gestion et marketing de l'industrie pharmaceutique. L'appel des îles étant trop fort, il a quitté l'Europe pour effectuer son service militaire obligatoire à Tahiti comme pharmacien officier responsable de l'approvisionnement pour le service de santé des armées. Il a servi dans la réserve du service de santé militaire, ayant aujourd’hui le grade de lieutenant-colonel. Fin 1998, il s'installe en Nouvelle-Calédonie où il débute sa carrière au sein d’un grossiste pharmaceutique local. Thierry achète sa propre pharmacie en 2001 et rejoint simultanément le conseil d'administration du Groupement des Pharmaciens de Nouvelle-Calédonie, grossiste local en médicaments et fournitures pharmaceutiques, dont il a occupé les fonctions de secrétaire et encore aujourd’hui de vice-président. Il préside l'Ordre des Pharmaciens de Nouvelle-Calédonie de 2013 à 2024. Thierry participe aux réunions d’un Rotary Club depuis 2001 et a été intronisé au Rotary Club de Nouméa Ouen Toro en 2002. Il en est secrétaire en 2003-2004 et président en 2006-2007. En 2008, il rejoint le Rotary Club de Nouméa Ducos Boulari, dont il est président en 2010-2011 puis responsable Fondation de 2011 à 2022. En juin 2022, il rejoint le Rotary Club de Nouméa. Il est à l'origine de la création de l'Interact Club École Internationale James COOK (EIJC) de Nouméa en 2023. Au niveau du district, Thierry a été membre du comité de la Fondation de 2009 à 2014 et gouverneur adjoint pour la Nouvelle-Calédonie pendant neuf ans. Il a été nommé gouverneur adjoint de l'année en 2016. La passion de Thierry pour la Fondation Rotary transparaît dans ses activités. Il a organisé neuf subventions de district, avec les trois clubs de Nouvelle-Calédonie, et deux subventions mondiales : l'une pour la Croix-Rouge locale et la seconde pour la fourniture d'un générateur d'oxygène à l'hôpital public de Tamatave à Madagascar. Il a reçu son premier Paul Harris Fellow en 2006, est devenu Donateur Majeur en 2008 et a atteint le niveau 4 de Donateur Majeur en 2022. Il a été membre de la Société Paul Harris de 2006 à 2023 et a reçu en 2011 la Citation pour service méritoire de la Fondation Rotary, qui récompense un Rotarien ayant fait preuve d'un service actif exceptionnel au sein de la Fondation Rotary. Après une « annus horribilis » en 2024, lorsque la famille a perdu sa maison, son chien, sa pharmacie et de nombreux autres biens lors des émeutes de 2024 en Nouvelle-Calédonie, Thierry a décidé qu'il était temps de changer de voie et de se reconvertir en gérant d'un groupe de boulangeries. Ses expériences dans le domaine de la pharmacie, au sein du Rotary au niveau des clubs et du district, ainsi qu’en tant que membre d'un Rotary club du Pacifique Sud apportent une perspective différente au gouverneur de district pour l'année qui suivra notre projet pilote de régionalisation. Depuis 2004, Thierry est marié à Valérie, professeur agrégée d'histoire, spécialisée dans la période médiévale. Ils ont un fils, Godefroy (19 ans) et une fi lle, Aliénor (17 ans).
