Rotary Youth Exchange - Farewell From Victoire, William and Ambre

It’s hard to believe that Victoire, William, and Ambre have reached the end of their year-long exchange in New Zealand and we have bid the farewell. At our meeting on June 16th, the trio took the stage as guest speakers and shared highlights from their unforgettable journey. Each had unique experiences that stood out—William’s was completing the Tongariro Crossing, Ambre cherished a weekend spent on a Marae, and for Victoire, it was the serenity of Doubtful Sound. They ticked off much of their Kiwi bucket lists, too: Victoire saw whales and dolphins for the first time, William braved skydiving and bungee jumping, and Ambre enjoyed a trip to the stunning Bay of Islands.

Of course, the year wasn’t without its challenges—language barriers, loneliness, adjusting to host families, and the inevitable pangs of homesickness. But the lessons they shared were powerful: that whānau isn’t always about blood, asking opens doors, everyone has something to teach, and it’s important to embrace every opportunity (and never say pavlova came from Australia!). They now proudly call themselves honorary New Zealanders—having blown on a pie, walked barefoot in the supermarket, eaten fish and chips, learned to love rugby, and even made chip sandwiches. Each student expressed heartfelt thanks to their host families and Rotarians for their support, kindness, and time.
It’s been a pleasure getting to know these three remarkable young people, and we wish them every success as when they settle back home.
